Specialty Items

We are very proud of our limited edition line of Daylily T-shirts, Tank Tops, Sweatshirts and Tote Bags. They are the highest quality available, 100% cotton, pigment dyed, and printed with a four-color screen printing process. They are manufactured only for Northstar Nurseries. The artwork is an original drawing done by Peggy of a scape of STRAWBERRY CANDY with two blooms and a couple of buds. The drawing is artistically placed over a rectangle to appear like real flowers showcased in a frame. It is simply beautiful.

Extra Fine Point Sharpie Industrial Markers
$1.10 each or a dozen for $10.00

Garden Marker Pens. Additives in the ink absorb ultraviolet light making this ink very fade resistant. This marker has broader point than the Sharpie Industrial and is designed to be read more easily in the garden. We use them to write the name of the cultivar on a plastic label and bury it under each clump of daylilies we plant. This is insurance against losing the name if the garden marker is removed from in front of the clump. The ink has remained visible and easily readable for as long as seven years as long as the label is not exposed to the sun $2.50 each or a Baker's dozen for $25.00

Note: Keep your spare Sharpie and Garden Markers in a sealed jar in the refridgerator. They will last much longer.

Pollen Storage Containers

Pollen can be dried and frozen and used for hybridizing up to a year later. If you have pollen on hand from choice cultivars, potential crosses and hybridizing potential is vastly expanded. Centrifuge tubes, 1.5 milliliter, are excellent for storing pollen. We offer centrifuge tubes in colors, and two sizes of boxes which also come in colors. We suggest a color coded system for pollen storage. For example, one color box could be for diploids and another color box for tetraploids. A bright color makes them easily visible in the garden. Colored centrifuge tubes, like blue or green, can make it easier to see if pollen (which is usually yellow) is available. We recommend the 100 tube pollen storage container.

Centrifuge Tubes.

These are 1.5 ml. pop-tops made of polypropylene. They have a frosted area on the top and side for writing a cultivar name or code. The colors available are natural, blue, and green.

Storage Boxes.

The boxes are made of sturdy polypropylene. They also have a frosted writing panel and raised edges to stack well in the freezer. They are available in 50 tube and 100 tube sizes. Both have a hinged lid and a locking clasp to prevent spills. The 50 tube size measures 1 3/4" X 5 3/4" and is a natural color. The 100 tube size is available in natural, red, yellow and blue, or assorted colors. It measures a convenient 5 5/8" X 8" X 2 1/8" tall.

Polyethylene Bags. Polyethylene bags 2" X 3" are the best way to store daylily seed in the refrigerator. We stock 2 mil ziplock reclosable bags that have a white writing block on the side to record and track your crosses. Some people dry their seeds before storage to prevent mold and some people store them wet where it seems to enhance germination. We store them wet and plant them after only 4 or 5 weeks storage.
